I grew up in a Christian home. My parent's always took me Sunday afternoon AWANA's (Approved Worksmen Are Not Ashamed 2 Tim. 2:15). There, we learned to memorize various scriptures. Whenever someone quoted a verse, I knew exactly where in the Bible that would be found. My motivation for memorizing these scripture was namely for prizes, and I was jealous because my brother, being only a year older than me, knew more verses than I did. I resented the fact that he received more praises. We were only 6 then.
So why memorize God's words? Because it pleases HIM and He uses it to help us deal with common, everyday events, problems, and temptations.
Psalm 119:11 "I have hidden your word in my heart that I may not sin against you."
